What do you actually need to make the perfect sushi rice? The suitable rice for making sushi is Japanese short grain rice. Short grains stick together and are better suited for making sushi. In addition to the sushi rice, you need rice vinegar, sugar and salt. You can also use Kombu to give extra flavor to your sushi rice. This is dried seaweed that is often used for preparing Japanese dishes. Here you will find everything you need to make your own sushi. You only need a pan or rice cooker and water.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sushi rice
  • 2 cups of water
  • 1/4 cup rice vinegar
  • 4 teaspoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • Piece of Kombu

Preparation

  1. Put the rice in a container or pan and wash the rice. Wash the rice until the water runs clear and the rice is clean. Use a colander for this. Let the washed rice dry for 10 minutes.
  2. Rice cooker: put the washed rice in the rice cooker and add water. The ratio of water to rice is 1 to 1. Taste whether the rice is well cooked. Pan: put the rice in the pan and add water. The ratio of water to rice is 1 to 1. Boil the rice for 15 minutes on low heat and then turn off the heat. Let the rice stand for 10 minutes.
  3. Put the rice vinegar in a pan and add sugar and salt. You can now also add the Kombu for extra flavor. Mix all ingredients well and taste it. You can add extra salt or sugar if you want.
  4. Add the mix to the rice using a ratio of 1 to 10. If you used 2 cups of rice and water, fill 10% of this cup twice with the rice vinegar mix and add it to the rice.
  5. Mix the rice carefully and gently so that the rice vinegar mix covers all the rice grains. Also be careful not to break the rice grains.
  6. You can only make sushi with cold rice, so let the rice cool down for a while. Once the rice has cooled, you can get started!
