Bring water to a boil (2.5 cup water on 1 cup of rice). Add the rice and add salt if necessary. Let gently simmer for 18-20 minutes with the lid closed. Remove the pan from the heat source and let it stand for a few minutes with the lid closed. Add more water for softer rice. Add less water for dry-boiling rice.
