Star anise

A well-known Chinese herb is star anise. This herb looks like a star-like flower and is brown in color. This is because it is a dried fruit of a daffodil-like flower. This flower comes from Illicium Verum trees that can mainly be found in Asian areas. The dried fruits contain a lot of anethole and smell like anise. The herb owes its name to the shape (star) and the anise smell. This is how you get star anise. What is the herb star anise often used for? A number of Asian recipes, such as Edamame (unripe soy beans and noodle soup. Star anise is also very tasty with the traditional Dutch hachée meat.
