What is Mochi?
What exactly is Mochi? Mochi, also known as Mochigome or Rice cake, is a well-known glutinous rice snack primarily in Japan, but also in Taiwan and China. Taiwanese and Chinese Mochi is often filled with sesame seeds or peanuts. In Japan, it is widely eaten during New Year's. Mochi symbolizes good fortune, which is naturally what you want during the new year. It is made from a special type of glutinous rice that is ground into a powder resembling a flour-like substance. This is then soaked, steamed, or boiled, and subsequently flattened into a sticky dough ball. They are then filled with all sorts of different flavors, such as green tea, strawberry, brown sugar, and so on.
Mochi ice cream
In addition to traditional Mochi, Mochi ice cream is also a popular variation of this Japanese snack. The two are often confused. Mochi ice cream is not actually made from traditional Mochi, but from a special dough mix of glutinous rice with some extra water. This dough is then wrapped around the ice cream, creating Mochi ice cream.
